Express freight your samples – saves problems

The need to have samples is vital for International trade… it allows both parties to examine the clarity of communication and quality of product.

When I visit trade shows I only take carry on luggage on flights; this makes getting around so much easier and faster. As more airlines start to charge for luggage this also makes commercial sense. Added to that the Customs Service (particularly in Australia) are not keen for you to carry samples and may  seize the gods and force you to do a formal entry(as they have done with me) – even if no duty is payable!

There are several large Express freight companies – such as TNT, FedEx, UPS and DHL. DHL for example have a product “Jumbo Box” that is convenient. They supply you with the box for either 10 or 20kgs and then collect it and you pre-pay for door to door service. (About $200 for 20kgs to or from Asia).  Recently in Hong Kong I had returned from China and had samples the night before I was due to leave and decided not to carry them back on the plane… I called past the DHL office at Mong Kok MTR station and picked up a box. After dinner I packed it up and rang them at 9pm. They said they would collect it before 10, (I thought next morning) at 9.45pm it was picked up and it arrived back in Australia about 2 hours after me.

Paperwork is important. Ensure you have copies of supplier invoices, descriptions of the goods, ingredients and Country of origin. Ideally also have the Harmonised tariff item numbers.
